How (and Why) I Make Natural Homemade Tortillas

When it comes to tacos, quesadillas, or wraps, my family and I used to always get tortilla shells right off the grocery store shelf. But once I started reading ingredient labels, I realized it's very hard to find tortillas that are not made with enriched flour or enriched corn. Did you know making natural homemade tortillas is a healthier option—and actually very easy?

The Problem with Store-Bought Tortillas

The enrichment process removes the life germ from the grain, stripping out the natural nutrients and replacing them with synthetic ones. This is a chemical process so that food doesn’t spoil. But the problem is, our bodies can’t process those fake ingredients the same way, so it leads to weight gain. 

And even if you do find a tortilla made with natural flour, most still include other processed and problematic ingredients—like inflammatory oils or preservatives. These come with a variety of health concerns, not to mention they make it hard to lose weight!

How to Make All-Natural Homemade Tortillas

That’s why we started making all-natural tortillas from scratch. The good news? It only takes four simple ingredients:

  • Natural flour (check the label—“flour” should be the only ingredient, not enriched)
  • Natural olive oil
  • Natural sea salt
  • Spring water

How to make them:

  1. Mix flour and sea salt.
  2. Add olive oil and water, stir until combined.
  3. Use your hands to form a dough mound.
  4. Cover and let it rest at least an hour (overnight is even better).
  5. Roll out small portions on a floured counter into tortilla shapes.
  6. Cook each one on a hot skillet until lightly browned on both sides.

That’s it—soft, delicious homemade tortillas without enriched flour. They taste better than store-bought and are way better for your health and weight loss goals!
