Who didn't live on Top Ramen in college? And if we're honest, wouldn’t we all love to eat it multiple nights a week? It's cheap, it's easy, and you can make it taste amazing with just a few add-ins.
But is Top Ramen healthy? Could it be holding you back from your weight loss goals?
The short answer is no, it’s not healthy. But the problem is less about the ramen, and more about the ingredients used by the brands most of us reach for at the store.
Once you understand the ultra-process, chemical-heavy ingredients in that 25-cent packet, and how easy it is to swap it for a natural version, you'll never go back. One simple label swap can turn ramen from a fat-storing survival food into a satisfying, weight loss friendly meal. Let’s learn how!
Look at the first ingredient on a Top Ramen package (or Maruchan, Nissin Cup Noodles, or any of the cheap brands). You'll see: Wheat Flour (Enriched with niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid).
It's the same enrichment trap we've talked about in other posts. The life germ gets removed from the wheat, stripping out the natural nutrients. So synthetic vitamins get sprayed back on, but our bodies can’t break those down the same way. Your body reads this as "fake food" and responds by storing fat instead of burning it for energy.
The enriched noodles are bad enough, but the seasoning packet? That's where things get really problematic. Here's what you'll find in most cheap ramen brands:
That little seasoning packet alone can contain 800 to 1,500 mg of sodium, plus added sugar. It's basically a salt bomb mixed with artificial flavoring and preservatives.
Here's the worst part: Top Ramen is engineered to leave you unsatisfied.
The enriched flour causes a blood sugar roller coaster that leaves you craving more food 30 minutes after you eat. The inflammation and gut disruption from all those additives slow down your metabolism. And because these are cheap calories that never actually satisfy your body's need for real nutrition, it's way too easy to eat two or three packs in one sitting.
You're left hungry, sluggish, and gaining weight, even though you just ate a full meal.
The good news? You can still have ramen and lose weight. You just need to choose a natural version. Find a brand with clean ingredients, especially for the noodles (should only be wheat flour, salt, and water— that's it!)
Store-bought clean ramen brands (steps in a better direction):
These are examples of what we call "steps in a better direction". Not all of them are completely natural when it comes to the seasonings they include, but having natural noodles is a great place to start.
Even better: Make your own broth in 30 seconds
Buy plain, non-fried ramen cakes and make your own broth using:
It takes the same amount of time as Top Ramen, tastes way better, and actually supports your weight loss instead of sabotaging it.
When Jabez el Israel realized the processed ingredients in Top Ramen were holding him back, he ditched the neon-orange packets and switched to a natural ramen option. The result? He noticed he was able to continue hitting his weight loss goals while still enjoying tasty bowls of ramen whenever he wanted.
He didn't have to give up ramen nights. He just had to stop eating the chemical-laden version and start choosing better brands with real ingredients.
Here's your two-minute challenge: go through your pantry and toss any ramen packets that list "enriched flour" or TBHQ on the label.
Next time you're at the store, look at the other ramen brands in the same aisle. Chances are, you'll find a better option with clean ingredients right there on the shelf. It might cost a little more than 25 cents, but your health is worth it!
Here’s a mindset shift that changed a lot for Jabez on his journey:
“I have to love and respect myself more than the love I have for convenience or the way cheap food tastes.”
Cheap ramen costs a quarter. But is it really worth it if it's costing your health and waistline?
Top Ramen and weight loss don't go together. But natural ramen made with real ingredients? That's a different story!
